"He looks like friggin' Clint Eastwood out there!" said Paul Casey. "He just needs a black Stetson and a poncho to complete the look."
That’s Alan Shipnuck covering Jimmy Walker’s recent win at the PGA Championship

Strutting his stuff

Alan writes, “A month ago he (Jimmy Walker) began working with Julie Elion, Mickelson's former sports psychologist. (Jimmy and Phil are frequent practice-round foils.) At Baltusrol part of the plan was for Walker to carry himself with more cowboy swagger. When a reporter noted during the champion's press conference that he had seemed surprisingly calm during the tense finish, Walker said, "That's huge, because that's what I was going for."

And Paul Casey suggests we haven’t seen the last of Jimmy’s cowboy swagger when he says, "I'll bet you anything, he won't be a one- and-done. Jimmy has too much game, too much grit. He's a classic Texas character. If this were the old days, he's the kind of guy you wouldn't want to get into a gunfight with."

Snead or Hogan?

As a senior golfer both in years and level of incompetence I watched with interest during Tiger’s halcyon years how the kids almost unanimously chose to be a wannabe Tiger Woods.

This gave rise to reflections on role models and the one I chose in my early golf years.
At this time two of the biggest names in golf were Sam Snead and Ben Hogan and I chose Ben Hogan with his flat white bonnet hat. A style I also chose to adopt but alas unlike Jimmy Walker I couldn’t do the Texas walk.

Given the choice and going back I do believe I would have been better off choosing to walk my talk as a Sam Snead. A much more relaxed person with a natural swing and so unlike Ben’s mechanistic model that required a PhD in physiology to understand.

Quote of the Day
“The only way of really finding out a man's true character is to play golf with him. In no other walk of life does the cloven hoof so quickly display itself.” – P G Wodehouse
