Wellington, Feb 12 NZPA - Auckland golfer Jan Bilger extended her New Zealand Masters Games record to three titles and two silver medals with more success in Wanganui today.
Bilger, 72, the wife of double Olympic yachtsman Jock Bilger, shot 177 to win her age group gross gold medal.
The former Remuera club champion played nine shots better than in 2007 when she last won in Wanganui and 11 shots better that in 2009 at her last Games when she was runner-up.
The best women's score this week was 161 by Yvonne Wimer (French Polynesia) who beat Carol Leary (Waimarino) by eight shots in the 35-39 age division.
Lowest nett scores were 141s from Queenslander Kelly Crouch (Helensvale), Karen Yorke (Marton) and Jill Timmins (Lower Hutt) with 76 pts from Anne Shearer (Taupo) and Diane Forrest (Manakau) the top stableford efforts.
Wanganui's Shane Wye, better known for his cricket and soccer skills, finished with the lowest men's gross score of 148, six shots better than Rex Harding (Wanganui) who won his age grade (65-69) to improve on his silver medal in 2009.
England's Timothy Miller (Kingston Heath) won the 55-59 gross title with 155, on the draw from Keith Stewart (Wanganui).
Best men's nett scores were 124 by Bill Stewart (Waverley) and 128 from Robert Organ (Marton) with Drew Rennie (Hawera) 83 and ex-Wanganui player Trevor Coley (Gold Coast - Australia) 81 carding the most stableford points.
Robin Turner (Lowestoft), 74, won England's second gold medal with 77 stableford points.
Tim Preston carried off both the 40-plus men's singles and doubles (with Mike Tate-Davis) tennis titles.
Preston beat David Lace (New Plymouth), who won a medal in the men's doubles in 2009, in the singles final.
Leonard Adams (Rahotu), Tony Rutledge (Wellington) and Relwyn Hooper (Wanganui) won men's A grade age group singles gold medals, with Hooper also winning in the doubles.
Locals Garnet Spooner and Gerry Gibbs, who won bronze medals at the last Games, beat Manawatu's Mike and Conrad Ryan for first place in the bocce pairs.
Marton's Frances Whale and Maxine Rowatt, in the champion women's fours in 2009 and third this year, won the women's lawn bowls pairs with Rowatt having amassed three golds, a silver and a bronze in two Games.
The Hawera Auroa Fossil Hunters cricket side went through unbeaten to win their tournament from Station United (Wanganui) who beat Country Districts (Central Hawke's Bay) by 46 runs for second place.
