Jones Advances, Barry Forced To Retire In Quarterfinals

17 May 2008 - GD Jones has reached the quarterfinals of the singles and semi's of the doubles at the US$10,000 Men's Futures 7 tournament in Mexico.

Jones beat Cristian Paiz, (GUA) 6/2 6/2 in the second round and now faces qualifier Christopher Klingemann (USA) in the quarters after the American knocked out the second seed in the second round.

Seeded second in the doubles, Jones and partner Roshan (USA) meet third seeds Martinez (VEN) / Sugiyma (JPN) in the semi-finals.

In form Kiwi Ellen Barry was up against seventh seed Erika Takao (JPN) in the singles quarterfinals. Barry took the first set 10-8 in the tiebreak, level at 3-all in the second the kiwi was forced to retire.

Meanwhile in Tampa, Florida Kiwi duo Rubin Statham and Adam Thompson lost their doubles quarterfinal in the third set super tiebreak. After winning the first set 6/1, their opposition Fass/Mirzaseh (USA) came back to win the second set 6/4 and the third set super tiebreak 10-8. Statham was seeded top in the singles but after an easy first round win he went down to American Joel Kielbowicz 2-6 6-3 6-3 in the second round. Thompson was knocked out of the first round after a three set battle with Vahid Mirzadeh (USA) 4-6 6-4 6-3. FOR FURTHER TENNIS NZ NEWS
