25 June 2008 - New Zealand's rising tennis star Marina Erakovic is through to the second round at her debut in the main draw at Wimbledon.

Last night she defeated her doubles partner in the tournament, Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands, in a close match. The final score was 7-6 (3) 7-6 (6)

Erakovic will now face Julia Goerges from Germany, a surprise winner over 23rd seed Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia. This was a tough match, going to three sets, with the final set being especially long. The score was 4-6 7-6 (6) 16-14, with the last set alone taking 136 minutes!

Goerges is ranked 102 in the world, compared to Erakovic's current 53.

Erakovic and Krajicek's first round doubles match is scheduled to start on Court 8 at 12 noon (UK time) today, against 15th seeds Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic and Janette Husarova of Slovakia. Both are experienced doubles and Grand Slam players, though the Erakovic/Krajicek combination goes some way back, with the two winning the Girls Doubles at the US Open Junior Tournament in 2004. Last week, Erakovic and Krajicek won the doubles at the Ordina Open in the Netherlands, giving Erakovic her first WTA title.
