Mike Modano is the heart and soul of the NHL ice hockey team the Dallas Stars. He has played 20 seasons in the league and looks to be set to retire this season with the Stars failing to make the playoffs again. I would like to pay my respect to the greatest American born ice hockey forward of all time as he laces them up tonight for game no. 1,459 against the franchise where it all started Minnesota. It would be fitting if this is where his career will end.

The last home game (of the season) for the Dallas Stars was against the Anaheim Ducks. There was a tribute played for Modano which was a very emotional moment as not only does it look like Mo is set to leave the organisation but also Jere Lehtinen & Marty Turco are looking to leave. The Stars franchise will be going through a major overhaul with the most experienced senior players about to leave. In this potential final home game these three great players earned the three Stars in one of the most memorable Stars games ever. Mo got a goal and assist including a shootout goal (which was a beauty) Lehtinen scored an assist and the overtime game winning goal. Turco shut the door when needed, keeping the ducks out of it where Jonas Hiller had stood on his head the whole way through regulation. The Stars season had been poor but this was the perfect way to send these guys off if that is the case.

Mikey Mo is a shoo-in for the hockey hall of fame as he has won the Stanley Cup for the Dallas Stars in 1998-1999 then returned to the finals to lose to the New Jersey Devils in 1999-2000. He had made the Stanley Cup finals with the Minnesota North Stars as well. This is where his career started as he was selected first overall in the 1988 draft. He is the highest scoring American player with 557 goals and 802 assists for 1,359 points. For twenty seasons Modano is an old school player and ends an era of heroes retiring. Recently franchise players like Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, Ron Francis and Mark Messier had retired marking the celebration of hockey's greatest players. Jeremy Roenick and Keith Tkachuk are retired too which changes the guard of the American Ice Hockey depth. Chris Chelios is still playing at 48. So maybe Modano is not done yet? One of Mo's most interesting records is how he passed Wayne Gretzky for the most game winning goals in NHL history with 92! This generation of hockey players retiring is very significant as they will always be remembered for what they gave to the sport and to see guys like Mark Recchi/Teemu Selanne still playing strongly at a high level, I hope they don't retire for a couple more seasons these guys still have a game to offer.

Mike Modano is the Dallas Stars hockey franchise player. He will always be remembered in the highest regard by the fans and by the teams across the league. There is a rumour going around that Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull and Mike Modano are interested in buying the Dallas Stars franchise off Tom Hicks. This would be very positive going forward for this franchise. The three players mentioned are a few of the most influential icons of the sport. Joe Nieuwendyk is the current GM who played a huge part in the organisation winning one of his three Stanley Cups with Dallas. (with Brett Hull and Mike Modano on the team) Anything is possible in Big D. Maybe Mo will play one more on the third line? He certainly can still compete and offer a lot of experience on the power play. It may be that another team takes him on for one more year. A lot of me thinks that Minnesota was where it all started for Modano why not end it there for the last game of the season?

Whatever this case Mike Modano has given everyone something to cheer about with a wonderful career full of highlights and entertainment in the greatest hockey league in the world. I hope that if today is the last day Modano plays that he scores to win the game. Who wouldn't want to do that in their last game? Thank you for the memories Mikey Mo and best wishes for the future!  Dallas Stars Website.
