This year's Commonwealth Games in India look headed for disaster. Fears of terrorism, bad food and unfinished venues are just some of the reasons why Aussie and English athletes are having second thoughts about attending.
And if the Aussies and the Brits don't show up, then all the fun, competition and spectacle will go out of the games. Heaven forbid but even second ranked sporting powers like Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands might go high on the medal table if that happens!
But what do us Kiwis do in the midst of all this - our Olympic and Commenwealth Games Federation is saying that New Zealand will still field a team in New Delhi!
Perhaps that might not be the best idea. I feel that the Aussie and English athletes and administrators are right. The prospect of terrorism is pretty high given that the US is continuing its imperialist war in next door Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore, the Al Qaeda suicide squads (who last spectacularly struck in Mumbai in late 2008) are just itching to hit out at English, Aussie, Canadian and Kiwi athletes. After all, British and Commonwealth forces are playing a prominent role in the continuing occupation of Afghanistan.
Then there are the various construction woes. If terrorism fails to claim Commonwealth athletes, then it might be a collapsed building erected by very low skilled, low paid and exploited Indian construction teams. This might transpire as no effort will be spared to bypass safety considerations (or profit motives) to get venue construction completed by October when the games are scheduled to begin. Besides safety, it would look really embarrassing if weightlifters had to compete in an unroofed venue.
Despite all these concerns, New Delhi organisers are saying 'don't panic, everything will be alright on the night'. Of course, they could be as, after all, Montreal (one of the most ill-fated Olympics of all time) still went ahead despite incomplete venues and a massive African boycott. Similar concerns were expressed prior to the Athens Olympics in 2004 about security and venue preparation but everything went smoothly.
But New Delhi might be a different case altogether. Given what has been written in the media in recent days, I already have a bad feeling about these Commonweatlh Games in that theycould be plagued by an informal elite athlete boycott and that alone could ruin the games. Yes, New Zealand might win an above average haul of gold medals if an informal boycott occurs, but then it might cheat us of testing ourselves against the best in the Commonweatlh.
However, as I was reminded by a well known sportsperson friend of mine, the Commonweatlh Games don't really compare to the Olympics or Paralympics as they are considered by some to be a regional level event. I do agree with her up to a point.
But to deprive Kiwi and other Commonwealth athletes of the chance to test themselves at a crucial midway point between Olympic Games would be sad. Nonetheless, I feel that cancelling the games for just this year might be a wise idea given the inefficiency that has characterised the Indian organisation of the games and the potential threats faced by it.
In that way, the understandably enthusiastic New Zealand Olympic and Commonweatlh Games Federation officials might be prevented from sending our athletes to a games that might be remembered, albeit, for all the wrong reasons.

I apologise for calling you a retard. But I found your article to be woefully ignorant and just citing things you have heard from friends and family. Of course its true tha India is an unfriendly country for wheelchair users. But things are moving in the right direction. Delhi's newly built underground suburban train system (usually just called Delhi metro) has been designed keeping in mind easy access for all members of society. And as part of the huge infrastructure overhaul, Delhi now has low-floor buses for easy boarding and wheelchair friendly bus stops.
The problem is India's elephant-size bueracracy which is ineffecient and corrupt. Yet India is moving forward despite them.
The point I want to make is that anyone voicing concerns about terrorism threatening the CW Games in Delhi is unjustified as the terror threat would be the same were the event be held somewhere else. In fact the threat in London would probably be more looking at the widespread radicalisation of the immigrant Pakistani population there. By contrast India has the second largest population of Muslims in the world and most of them are well integrated in the mainstream. The threat of cross border terrorism will be there but so far all major sporting and non-sporting events in India have been terror-free due to the high focus on security.

I've just come back from India - and I there's a massive effort going on in New Delhi with regards to getting the infrastructure up-to-speed for demands upon which it'll be put under for these upcoming games. I don't think there's any other city in the world right now that's undergoing as much works as is the whole of Delhi! - however, only time will tell as to whether they pull this off in time for the games.
Either way, it's good for the city whilst it lasts - I don't think it's ever seen such an overhaul - and after the event has passed - the impoteus to continue the good work may just pass too.

You can be sure that while our government & the commonwealth committee are busy scratching their heads & deciding whether or not to send our team to the New Delhi games, at the same time the terrorists will be planning it & no amount of planned security might be good enough to stop an attack.
Although there is talk of our games team being 'securely' locked in to their designated areas, they will still have to be in the same areas as local staff in such places as the dining rooms, & also staff will have to enter the athletes bedrooms for general upkeep, & whats more the local staff will be made up of many different religions including the ones of most concern, the muslims & some very radical at that, so the final decision about sending our team comes down to nothing more than a calculated gamble.

Well, I guess they've been glued to the TV news here in India, where the full extent of this scandalous sham has been coming to light. Thanks to the UN Development Agency's new MPI Poverty Report and various other surveys, we now know that 55% of Indians live BELOW poverty line; 47% of Indian children are malnourished and therefore physically as well as mentally stunted (a percentage higher than Sudan and North Korea!); 20% of Indians go hungry everyday, of which women suffer disproportionately; 160 million Untouchables are being oppressed by the Caste System and denied the very basic of rights; functional literacy stands at around a pathetic 50%, etc. All the figures add up to India being poorer than most Sub-Saharan African states. Now, here's an idea for you Indians: how about putting a lid on your loud mouths and start doing real work for a change? Put action over words, substance over style, and actual results over marketing gimmicks. If you Indians can do that, you might just catch China by, say, 2150. If you want to catch China earlier than that, then you'd have to invite the Brits back.

Healthy criticism should always be welcomed and therefore as far as pointing out errors or scams or mistakes whatever one may call should be seen in a good light. This will surely help to improve. I hope Indians will accept these criticism with all humility and improve on them.
Having said that i agree there are doubts on how New Delhi will handle these games and at the same time i would like to criticize this article (and comments on it) as its just too harsh on INDIA. I am just back from INDIA from a tourist tour and i must say they are working hard (may not be smartly) to get the things in place. So lets hope games will prove to be a success. Btw if that interests my fellow brits ... British govt said they cannot return Kohinoor. Its an irony that Kohinoor which was LOOTED from INDIA is still on our crown jewels and we call INDIA by all bad names. lolz
My great grand father once served in INDIA when ofcourse it was not an independent nation. I have read many old dated articles to get an account of INDIA of that times. You want to see what working hard looks like, check out the ahead-of-schedule preparations for the 2012 Olympics in London, or read up on how the Chinese blew away all expectations in their preparations for the 2008 Olympics. Things work differently in Developing and a Developed country. While for sure i am proud that London is way way way ahead in its preparation for the Olympics while New Delhi is lagging behind but i would always take into account the present infrastructure in both the cities. London already has best of the world infrastructure and yes more accountable politicians though will not say we have clean and non-corrupt leaders.

The main problem with india is its bad political environment. Its a shame for the country, because of these greedy politicians the name and fame of the country is in this stage today.
