On behalf of the New Zealand rugby community and New Zealand's five Rebel Sport Super Rugby franchises, the New Zealand Rugby Union has passed on messages of condolence to the family of Shawn Mackay and to the Brumbies and the Australian Rugby Union after the tragic death of the Brumbies and former Australian Sevens player.

Mackay passed away on Monday from injuries sustained in an accident suffered while he was on tour with the Brumbies in South Africa.

NZRU CEO Steve Tew said the NZRU had written to the Brumbies expressing sympathy to the family and the Brumbies team and organisation, and to the Australian Rugby Union, on behalf of all those involved in rugby in New Zealand.

"Our thoughts go out to Shawn's family and to his team mates and friends in the Brumbies. It is an absolute tragedy to lose a young man and team mate in such circumstances."

It was also announced that a moment's silence would be observed at the two Rebel Sport Super 14 matches in New Zealand this weekend in Auckland and Invercargill in honour of Shawn, and that teams would be invited to wear armbands as a mark of respect.
