Auckland, March 11 NZPA - A mini collapse saw New Zealand get the speed wobbles after a flying start to their innings in the fourth Chappell-Hadlee Trophy one-day cricket international against Australia here today.
From 120 for one in the 20th over, New Zealand reached the halfway point of their innings at 133 for four off 25 after Australian captain Ricky Ponting sent them into bat at Eden Park.
New Zealand dropped opener Peter Ingram, and new combination Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill tore into the Australian bowlers, rattling up 63 off 7.4 overs.
Again, the New Zealand batsmen were largely guilty of throwing their wickets away.
Guptill went first for 30 when Ponting held a low chance at short cover off Shane Watson.
Promoted to No 3, Ross Taylor was unusually circumspect in facing 37 balls for 15 before he lofted a catch to a diving Michael Hussey at deep mid-wicket.
Taylor's wicket signalled a mini collapse of three for 10 as Australia grabbed back some of the momentum.
Debutant Shanan Stewart faced nine balls for four before he charged spinner Nathan Hauritz and gave Watson a simple catch.
McCullum was in a great touch, charging the pacemen and hitting three fours and four sixes as he cruised to 50 off 53 balls. But he lost his way slightly after reaching the half-century and on 61 he chipped Hauritz to Cameron White at short mid-wicket.
Scott Styris and captain Daniel Vettori, both promoted up the order, were left to revive the innings.
New Zealand made three changes from their six-wicket defeat in Hamilton in the third match, with James Franklin and Daryl Tuffey both returning from injury for Neil Broom and Michael Mason, while Stewart was summoned for Ingram, who was released to play for Central Districts in the Plunket Shield.
Australia, leading the five-match series 2-1, were unchanged.
