Napier, Dec 11 NZPA - New Zealand were 47 without loss in reply to Pakistan's first innings of 223 at stumps on the opening day of the third cricket test at McLean Park here today, a deficit of 176.

Openers Tim McIntosh (31) and debutant BJ Watling (13) negotiated 19 overs before bad light halted play four overs before the scheduled close.

Imran Farhat top scored with an unbeaten 117, his third test century while Iain O'Brien (4-35) and Daryl Tuffey (4-52) were the leading bowlers.
