Sydney, March 21 NZPA - New Zealand were knocked out of the Cup competition at the International Rugby Board sevens world series tournament in Adelaide today after losing their quarterfinal with Samoa 24-19 in extra time.

New Zealand conceded the game-levelling try in the final minute of regulation time to Simaika Mikaele -- and had to play extra time a man down after Kurt Baker was sinbinned for dissent after it was awarded.

Timoteo Iosua swiftly took advantage of Samoa's superior numbers to dot down between the posts.

New Zealand lead the series with 84 points from Samoa's 70 but that lead is destined to be trimmed by their relegation to the plate competition.

New Zealand will meet Fiji in a plate semifinal after the Pacific Islanders were eliminated 26-22 by Australia when conceding a try after the final hooter.

Earlier, New Zealand breezed through pool play by posting big wins over Scotland, Tonga and Argentina, scoring 104 points and conceding seven.

Samoa 24 (Mikaele Pesamino, Loto Lui, Simaika Mikaele, Timoteo Iosua tries; Lui 2 con) New Zealand 19 (Save Tokula, Kurt Baker, Zar Lawrence tries; Tomasi Cama 2 con). Halftime: 14-5. Fulltime: 19-19.
