NZ Limp To 241 For Nine In Fifth ODI

Wellington, March 13 NZPA - Australia were set a target of 242 to complete a 4-1 Chappell-Hadlee Trophy one-day cricket series victory after another poor New Zealand batting display in game five here today.

It was the familiar story from the previous three matches as New Zealand lost regular wickets before posting 241 for nine off their 50 overs at a fine, chilly Westpac Stadium.

Allrounder Scott Styris was the only New Zealand batsman to post a half-century, scoring 55 off 66 balls before he chopped a James Hopes delivery onto his stumps.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting made it five from five successful coin tosses in the series and continued the trend from games three and four of sending New Zealand in.

They were soon in strife at 32 for three after key man Brendon McCullum (1), Martin Guptill (7) and Shanan Stewart (6) were removed inside the eight-over mark.

McCullum was the big wicket for Australia as he charged recalled paceman Clint McKay and chipped a simple catch; Guptill was run out in a mix-up with Ross Taylor and Stewart, in his second ODI, got a thin edge off Mitchell Johnson.

Taylor and Styris added 53 before Taylor was again caught in the deep, hooking Shane Watson, after scoring 30 off 55 balls.

Captain Daniel Vettori (28) and Styris added the best partnership of the innings, 68 for the fifth wicket, but both departed in consecutive overs.

Gareth Hopkins (26) and Nathan McCullum (17) tried to revive the innings before it was left to Daryl Tuffey - fresh from clouting four sixes in Auckland - to hit out at the end as he cracked 36 off 41 before he was caught off the final ball by McKay.

Johnson was again the pick of the bowlers with two for 42 while McKay was expensive but ended with two for 57.

New Zealand made one change to their side, with spinner Nathan McCullum recalled for James Franklin, while McKay was summoned for Ryan Harris who had a toe injury.
