Wellington, Sept 3 NZPA - New Zealand sailors remain strong medal prospects at the Laser world championship at Hayling Island off Britain.

Mike Bullot and Andy Maloney completed the overnight (NZT) races in a share of third place overall,

with Andrew Murdoch sixth and Josh Junior eighth.

Eight New Zealanders have qualified for the gold fleet to race over the next three days when Australian Tom Slingsby will look to protect his 14-point lead at the head of the fleet.

Briton Paul Goodison is second on 34 points, with Bullot and Maloney next best on 36.

Bullot finished third and 23rd overnight while Maloney posted a third and fourth placings.

Murdoch is sixth overall after finishing ninth and first while Junior slipped from second overall to eighth after finishing eighth and 29th.

Sam Meech is 17th overall, James Sandall 38th and Max Andrews 43rdh.
