The six Paterson Trophy Indoor Bowls winners will be found at the weekend (Friday 17 July to Sunday 19 July) to go forward to the Lion Foundation Welch Trophy inter-district final at Porirua on Friday 4th September to Sunday 6th September.

The current Welch Trophy champions are Canterbury and they have made massive changes to the team that won Welch Trophy last year. Those to retain their places are the inspirational New Zealand representative Simon Thomas who led the team to victory last year. He will combine with Ashley Diamond, Robbie Osbourne and his wife New Zealand Representative Julie Thomas all of whom have yet to win a Welch Trophy title.

The other team is skipped by the very experienced Blair Spicer who was the skip of the champion pairs at this year's nationals but he will be trying to win his first Welch Trophy medal. All of his team have medals to their credit Owen Ditfort and Michael King from last year but the veteran player David Philpott who tasted success way back in 1981 will play two in that combination while Alan Clarke moves to the reserve.

Auckland, Waikato, Manawatu, Hutt Valley, Canterbury and Southland won the Paterson Trophies last year.

35 year Deanna Meaclem has been selected to play in the Wairarapa team. She is following in her mothers and grandmothers footsteps to play indoor bowls at this level. It may be the first time that three generations of females in one family have achieved this distinction. Sherryn Smith her mother played for Hutt Valley and Horowhenua and her grandmother Jean Lambert played for Hutt Valley and also won the Truth Cup at the 1987 nationals
