Triple Eight Race Engineering's Scott Pye has made an impressive start to the weekend at the Sucrogen Townsville 400, topping the timesheets in today's final Dunlop Series practice session.

Pye used the first session to familiarise himself with the Townsville circuit, working on setup moreso than outright speed in the opening stages.

The V8 Supercar rookie posted the third-fastest time of the session, a 1.15.5030, on his final flying lap.

Starting the second thirty-minute session on used hard compound tyres, Pye struggled to get a feel for the track and switched to a green set of hard tyres for the final 15 minutes.

Once on the new set of tyres, the Monster Energy/Gear Wrench-supported driver posted three flying laps and went straight to the top of the timesheets with a time of 1:14.8379, the fastest of any car in both sessions.

"Early in the first session I struggled to put a lap together but after a few small changes to the setup I'm fairly happy with where we ended," Pye said.

"The Commodore felt great in the second session, the intial turn in was much better and everywhere we struggled on old tyres we seemed to pick up with new set.

"I think the tyre degradation is something we are going to have to take into consideration but we are looking good for tomorrow," Pye concluded.

The Dunlop Series will qualify at 9.30am (AEST) tomorrow followed by Race 1 at 12.10pm (AEST)
