Rearguard Action Pays Dividends For Harbour

Auckland, June 12 NZPA - North Harbour engineered a superb second half fight back to pip Nelson 76-75 in 14th round National Basketball League action tonight.

Nelson, led by discarded New Zealand Breaker Phill Jones, seemed to have the contest under control at the Trafalgar Centre when leading 46-29 at the main break.

However, 19-point hauls from guard Corey Webster, Mike Bell and Mychal Green orchestrated a dominant final two quarters, enabling the fifth-placed Heat to sneak a one-point victory in a match that had no bearing on the play-off picture.

Nelson remain second behind run away leaders Waikato despite the loss while Harbour could not reel in fouth-placed Christchurch despite the southerners suffering a 91-101 defeat on home court to Auckland.

Auckland mirrored Nelson's explosive start but skipping to a 30-20 advantage at the end of the opening stanza and although Tall Black Paul Henare instigated a recovery that saw the scores locked at 48-all at halftime, the visitors finished strongly.

Janev Blogoj's game-high 37-point haul ensured Auckland regained some breathing space down the stretch while Tall Black Casey Frank weighed in with 22 points.

In Taradale, Hawke's Bay --the sixth and final qualifier for the post season -- were too strong for out of contention Taranaki, winning 92-64.
