New Zealand cricket icon Stephen Fleming has accepted an invitation to join the Board of Cricket Wellington.

"We are thrilled to announce this so soon after Stephen's retirement from international cricket," said Cricket Wellington Chairman, Ian Wells.

"His vast cricketing experience, knowledge and wisdom will be invaluable assets and the Board and staff look forward to working with him after his return from involvement with the IPL programme in India."

Although he has retired from international cricket, Fleming is also keen to continue playing one-day cricket for Wellington.

Cricket Wellington CEO, Gavin Larsen, said this was not only great news for cricket in our province but "having a Board member still wearing the Firebirds' colours represents a ground breaking initiative.

"Utilising Stephen's brilliant cricketing skill set can only help to move the game forward in Wellington across so many areas," he said.

Fleming noted that one of his roles as a Board member would be to assist in the development of the EPD (Elite Player Development) area.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to use my knowledge and understanding of high performance cricket to help this area of the game in Wellington. That, and the opportunity to contribute in other areas where appropriate, will I hope bring benefit to all areas of our game," he said.
