Napier, March 3 NZPA - Scott Styris could reap a $US175,000 $NZ250,800) Indian Premier League (IPL) payday without even leaving New Zealand this month as he braces for his international cricket return.
The veteran allrounder was recalled to the 13-man New Zealand one-day squad for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series, although captain Daniel Vettori hinted he was unlikely to be picked for today's opening match against Australia here at McLean Park.
Still, he will likely get game time during the five-match series before the IPL starts on March 12, with Styris' Deccan Chargers the defending champions.
Styris was signed on a three-year deal which expires after the coming tournament, and although he hasn't made the initial squad he would still get the cash.
"I'm not in the 23-man squad but I'm still available depending on selections for international teams or anything, so I'm still on standby and I guess I have to be ready to go over at the drop of a hat," Styris said.
"I still get paid, nothing changes, it's just a bit of a bonus if I stay back home."
Rather than stew over missing the IPL action, Styris has some rejuvenated international ambitions to mull over after his surprise recall.
It proved Styris still featured in the minds of selectors Vettori, Mark Greatbatch and Glenn Turner with the Twenty20 World Cup looming in the Caribbean next month and the 50-over version early next year.
"It feels like it's been a long time since I've played, it's been good just to get back into the swing of things," Styris said.
"It's always nice to get a callup and hopefully at some stage to play. I feel like I've been playing really well but there's been times when I felt I was going to get picked and I didn't and other times when I didn't think I'd get picked and I did.
"I've learned to just wait for the phone call and take it from there."
He put his case with a handy domestic Twenty20 and one-day season as his Auckland side were beaten in both finals.
For a man with 29 tests, 160 one-day internationals and 22 Twenty20 internationals in a decade-long career, he felt he had more to offer and was relieved to get the callup.
Having retired from test cricket in early 2008, he played just four one-dayers last year -- one against India and the rest against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi last November.
"Mark Greatbatch said to keep having faith in the selectors so that still gave me the motivation and focus to strive to take wickets and score runs for Auckland.
"I enjoy these two versions of the game a lot more and all my trainings have been geared around the shorter versions."
Skipper Vettori said Styris was not currently in the top one-day 11 but would play against Australia some time in the next 10 days.
"He's done a wonderful job and forced his way in through weight of performance. He's probably just sitting in behind the pecking order at the moment but there's no doubt he'll get his chance in the series at some stage."
