Wellington, March 13 NZPA - Captain Daniel Vettori and Scott Styris were trying to bail New Zealand out of trouble after another poor start in the fifth one-day cricket international against Australia here today.
After captain Ricky Ponting won a fifth consecutive toss and sent New Zealand in at Westpac Stadium, they were 114 for four after 25 overs.
Australia already had the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in safe keeping after winning game four by six wickets, and they continued their early dominance here.
Opener Brendon McCullum (1) had a rare failure when he charged recalled paceman Clint McKay and chipped a catch to Ponting.
New Zealand lost a further wicket in the fifth over when Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill had a mix-up and the latter was run out narrowly for seven by a James Hopes direct hit.
Thursday's debutant Shanan Stewart could manage only six before Mitchell Johnson had him caught behind to make it 32 for three.
Taylor and Styris added 53 before Taylor was again caught in the deep, hooking Shane Watson, for 30 off 55 balls.
Styris was unbeaten on 32 with Vettori on 16 at the halfway stage as they tried to mount a rescue mission with New Zealand looking to end a three-match losing streak.
New Zealand made one change to their side, with spinner Nathan McCullum recalled for James Franklin, while McKay was summoned for Ryan Harris who had a toe injury.
