Tailenders Prop Up England Innings

Wellington, March 7 NZPA - Some stubborn resistance from tailenders Sajid Mahmood and Mark Davies saw England through to 331 for nine at stumps on the first day of the second four-day cricket match against New Zealand A in Christchurch today.

Although wickets fell regularly early on - at one stage England A were a distinctly uncomfortable 112 for five - the lower order came through when it counted.

No 8 batsman Gareth Batty hit a stubborn 64 off 94 before he was bowled by Ewen Thompson, bringing Mahmood to the wicket in a belligerent frame of mind.

The England A No 10 ended the day on 40 from 46 balls, including six fours and a six. Davies, somewhat more circumspect, provided solid support on five not out.

Earlier on, both Luke Wright (69) and Samit Patel (64) made good starts but failed to carry on.

For New Zealand A, BJ Arnel picked up a useful 3-46 off his 18 overs, while Thompson managed 3-85 off 17.

Abbreviated scores: England 331-9 (Stephen Moore 22, Samit Patel 64, Luke Wright 69, Gareth Batty 64, Liam Plunkett 29, S Mahmood 40 no; BJ Arnel 3-46, Ewen Thompson 3-85) vs New Zealand A.
