Thursday Night's A Great Night For Basketball

The NZ Breakers will once again stake a claim for Thursday night in the sporting diary with the release today of the official draw for the Australian National Basketball League season 2009/10.

Basketball Australia made the draw official today for the 8 team league, one that will include the Melbourne Tigers after their decision to enter the league late last week.

Breakers General Manager Richard Clarke is delighted with the draw, one that sees every Breakers home game on a Thursday night at the North Shore Events Centre, and play each game at the earlier time of 7pm.

"This is the draw we wanted from a marketing and a playing point of view. Thursday nights have proven very successful for us on a busy sporting calendar, allowing us to create something special at the North Shore Events Centre for our fans and our players. We enjoyed great crowds last year and want to continue building on that success with even bigger numbers this year.

"The other thing we have avoided is a long period of time when we are not playing at home. The only time this occurs this season is over the Christmas and New Year break when many of our supporters are also out of town or busy with Christmas celebrations so we feel this is not a bad time to be playing away from home."

The Breakers have a home game against Cairns Taipans to start the season on Thursday September 24th. They will then end the season with 2 out of the final 3 games at home, another plus if the team is once again in play off contention and looking for the atmosphere that has turned the North Shore Events Centre into a fortress for visiting teams.

Clarke says now the draw is official, the club can seriously get to work putting the finishing touches on all aspects of the season.

"We have a team that has been working diligently over the past few months, sometimes in trying circumstances with the uncertainty we have been through. But we have always had faith that Basketball Australia was on the right path and that a meaningful competition would be in place for the coming season.

"That faith and hard work puts us ahead of the competition in terms of our planning for the new season. We aim to further improve on our game night experience for everyone but in particular families. The action on court is often very intense and competitive; off court however we are about having fun and enjoying a great atmosphere with family and friends. We will bring a mix of the old and the new but guarantee families and basketball fans a great night out."

A significant change for the new season is a change of tip off time for home games to 7pm. The club is making the change to better suit all fans, but in particular families that can now be home by as early as 9pm after attending a game.

"The Breakers has a strong family focus and wanted this season to investigate all ways of enhancing the experience for family groups attending our games. One obvious way was to make games more accessible for children by bringing the tip off forward half an hour. This combined with the introduction of 40 minute games will enable many to come along, enjoy the night and be home by 9pm depending on where they live." For Coach Andrej Lemanis the release of the draw holds less significance but does tick off another key milestone.

"All that matters to me and the players is we will get on court 30 times in the season, I would hope plus a few more in the play offs. Everyone knows my mantra by now, we take one game at a time, do things right and the ladder will look after itself.

"But what the release of the draw does for coaches and players is put a line in the sand, so each game is now real, each opponent identified and our plans can be finalized. We have plenty of work to do in the months ahead but I can't wait for the 24th September and for it all to start again at the North Shore Events Centre."

With information on the draw now confirmed and other details around salary and points caps Clarke says the Breakers will now set about finalizing the playing roster and confirming a pre-season programme.

"We are nearly there with just the final few pieces of the jigsaw to put in place. And that is an accurate description. Not all pieces are the same size, shape or dimensions but each has its place in the big picture. Get one wrong and you struggle to achieve that desired final outcome."

Further announcements will follow with regards the playing roster and commercial partners to the Breakers for the forthcoming season.
