Is it just me or is it a fact that The Times sports journalists are tad negative and like to take their scythe to tall poppies? Stephen Jones is forever taking a swipe at New Zealand rugby and the All Blacks in particular. And now there’s John Hopkins saying, “Tiger Woods will not beat Jack Nicklaus’s record

As you were! Now what’s this! A touch of positivity from Mr Hopkins must be because it’s about an Englishman.

Hopkins is covering Paul Casey’s win at the Shell Houston Open

Hopkins writes, “His victory was a reminder of just how much English golf has improved since 2001 when Westwood was the only golfer from that country in the top 100. Now there are seven in the top 50, Casey being joined by Westwood, Rose, Donald, Poulter, Oliver Wilson and Ross Fisher.”

Now back to why “Tiger won’t make it”

“My money is still on Nicklaus. Woods's injured leg does appear to have recovered but say he attracts another injury, this time to the other leg or to an arm. Say he is injured in a car accident as Ben Hogan was or, dare one say it, physically attacked? What happens then?”

Nice guy huh! ‘Nuf said.

Now here’s something about a really nice guy called Fred Couples.

Golf Magazine’s Cameron Morfit is interviewing Boom Boom

“Fred Couples makes it all seem so effortless. But as Couples' family tragedies and chronic back pain have proven, appearances can be deceiving”

Given all the stuff he’s had to handle in his life I find it quite remarkable he’s remained such a nice guy and soooooo laid back.

Here’s a classic Boom Boom quote in case you’ve never heard it.

Asked why he avoided answering the phone Fred said, "Because there might be someone on the other end."

I can always depend on Geoff Shackelford for a lead to a good wrap up story.

Gary Player calls it a day- His final Masters appearance.

And how about this good one-liner from the wee man from South Africa?

“I’m hitting it so short off the tee, I can hear the ball land.”
