Tiger Woods Is Crouching After A Hiding

Tiger Woods (to use a movie title metaphor) is literally crouching after a hiding. Should we be so concerned? Not really.

This story is no better than a distraction created by a media whom are after big profits. As the old news media saying goes, "If it bleeds, it leads."

The story began late last week when Tiger Woods had an unexplained car crash outside his Florida home. Gossip columnists and the entertainment media (along with their sporting counterparts) smelt a rat. After a police media conference last week, where it was confirmed that Woods had indeed crashed his car, allegations began to surface that he has had numerous extramarital affairs. And the late night argument that Woods had with his beautiful Swedish wife Elin Nordegen over them were what (indirectly) caused it.

Indeed, the Tiger had been out to play with a string of beautiful American women. So far, the list of romps that Tiger has been said to have enjoyed in various dens have included those with Rachel Uchitel, Kalika Moquin and Jaimee Grubbs. No doubt in the good old fashioned American way, these women will be trading in on their new found fame with books, interviews and perhaps their own reality TV show (eventually). But right now, they are just getting used to being the centre of attention in the biggest sports sex scandal since the Kobe Bryant rape case ten years ago.

Apart from the fact that his wife may have physically hit him (even though she was rightly angry), nothing else really concerns me about this story. All famous people be they politicians, actors, sportspeople and businesspeople, irrespective of their gender or sexual orientation, have affairs. While affairs are hurtful for both parties concerned (especially the faithful partner), they have happened for time immemorial and will keep happening. If two consenting people want to have sex where either one or both maybe in a committed relationship, then that is their choice, but beware the consequences!

In other words, I don't give a damn about who Tiger has slept with! Yes, he maybe viewed as somewhat of a hypocrite due to being promoted as a good family man for so long. But, as he made the choice to do what he is alleged to have done, then he should be responsible for his actions and only before his wife and family - not the whole world.

Besides, don't the media have more serious concerns to report on? In the United States alone, there is real concern over the ongoing health care debate, climate change and the economy. Instead, the 24/7 corporate media machine demands salacious stories about celebrities in order to attract readers and viewers. And Tiger has become the latest fodder to feed the manufactured diet for tabloid news. I say manufactured because if people are conditioned to concentrate on the lives of celebrities as being a so-called 'distraction' away from the real news that actually impacts on ordinary people's lives, then the corporate media win through the undermining of genuine public discourse in this way.

Furthermore, I have always questioned the need to pay elite sportspeople and teams huge amounts of money. Why is Tiger, who gets paid millions for simply swinging a golf club around, more valuable than, for example, a doctor, a nurse or a power station worker? Of course, the free market dictates that the more media friendly a sporting personality is, then the more they are worth!

That's why the media need to take a good look at their news priorities and values. Chasing around after an adulterous sporting star, like Tiger Woods, shouldn't be one of them.
