Vodafone Warriors And Blues To Duel In Surf Boats At The Viaduct

Surf boats will be the common link when the Vodafone Warriors and the Blues hit the water to face off in a rugby league v rugby union battle at Auckland's Viaduct Harbour tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday).

Teams from the city's two major professional sporting franchises will go head to head in a series of races in the Princes Wharf and Maritime Museum waterway.

The pre-Christmas promotion has been driven by former Kiwi Mark Bourneville and the Piha Surf Life Saving Club with support from ex-champion triathlete Ric Wells and the Muriwai Surf Life Saving Club.

This will be the third time Bourneville and the Piha club have worked with the Vodafone Warriors on their off-season training programme.

Early last year before the 2008 NRL season the forwards were handed the mission of rowing in surf boats from Takapuna Beach to Rangitoto Island, leaping out of their boats to run to the summit and back and then jumping into the boats again to return to Takapuna.

Earlier this year Bourneville ran an alternative training session at Takapuna mixing beach running with surf boat races but this time he has gone for a cross codes programme in the city centre.

Each code will have two teams competing. Vodafone Warriors players taking part are Manu Vatuvei, Sam Rapira, James Gavet, Simon Mannering, Jesse Royal, Micheal Luck, Ian Henderson and Joel Moon.

Races featuring celebrities and media representatives are also scheduled.

The race programme is due to run from 2.15pm-5.15pm.
