Vodafone Warriors Committed To Robust End Of Season Review

Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah today confirmed the club would undergo a more thorough end-of-season football review than usual following its disappointing 2009 NRL campaign.

As part of the review process, he said a group of New Zealand sports people are spending time at the club this week observing the Vodafone Warriors' football operations leading up to and including their final match of the season against Melbourne at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday night (September 5).

"Everyone at the club acknowledges our NRL efforts this year haven't been acceptable and we're committed to doing all we can to bring about significant improvement next year," he said.

"One of our primary goals is to establish ourselves as a regular finals club. After making the play-offs the previous two seasons it was a major disappointment for us to miss out this year.

"While we conduct internal reviews after each season and are already doing so for this season, we also believe it would be beneficial to seek some external views on how we operate."

To that end, Scurrah said long-time former Vodafone Warriors Monty Betham and Awen Guttenbeil, ex-Kiwi captain Hugh McGahan and world champion New Zealand softballer Dean Rice had accepted invitations to observe the club's football organisation this week.

"It's our belief that their external views of our operations could provide some valuable assistance to help us improve next year," said Scurrah.

"A review of this type needs to be independent of our daily current operations in a similar way to the SPARC-led review of the New Zealand Rugby League. We want our fans and partners to have confidence that we are committed to performing at a far more acceptable level in 2010.

"The scope and nature of the review this year is healthy for any business to undertake from time to time."

Vodafone Warriors coach Ivan Cleary said he hoped the overall review process would provide benefits for the club's 2010 campaign.

"For a variety of reasons our efforts this year have been disappointing, especially after making the finals in the previous two seasons," he said.

"No one in our organisation is pleased with what has happened, especially me. We know we need to improve if we're to achieve what we expect of ourselves next year and we're determined to do all we can."

Scurrah said Betham, Guttenbeil, McGahan and Rice began looking at the club's football operations this morning (Tuesday, September 1).
