Wellington Tame The Champions

Wellington, May 29 NZPA - Wellington temporarily put National Basketball League champions Waikato in their place here tonight.

On the same court where they lost the 2008 final to the same team, Wellington scored a 100-86 victory built around a rousing third quarter performance.

Trailing 46-51 at the halftime break, the hosts came out firing to dominate the third period 29-15 and give themselves a 10-point buffer heading into the final quarter.

With Mike Efevberha in hot form as he hit a game-high 39 points, Wellington kept Waikato at bay in the last term before earning a comfortable winning margin.

Leon Henry and Lindsay Tait Lent solid support with 18 and 16 points respectively for the winners.

Waikato's best on the score sheet was Justin Bailey with 21, followed by Thomas Abercrombie 16 and veteran Pero Cameron 12.

It was Cameron's 300th appearance at league level.
