Reigning world champions New Zealand Women made it two wins out of two tonight (Tuesday) after a convincing 48-3 defeat of England A at Esher RFC.
The Black Ferns, who inflicted a much closer 16-3 victory over England on Saturday, fielded another strong side and certainly lived up to their billing of being the world's number one ranked side.
Now New Zealand face their final test against England on Saturday, when the reigning RBS 6 Nations champions hope they can wreak revenge on the Black Ferns on the Twickenham stage in the Investec Challenge Double Header, kick off 445pm with entry free into the stadium at 415pm.
England A Head Coach Mike Barnett said: "This was a great learning curve for this young team. 'A' team rugby is all about development and with the world cup just nine months away this has provided the England Elite Squad with an invaluable insight as to where we need to be in August next year.
"They played with great width and some serious pace in attack. We matched up physically and in fitness but some of our core skills were not as spot on as theirs. Sonia Green captained well, as well as put in some good hits and made some impressive breaks. She did a good job in leading this young side who have learned some beneficial lesions today."
New Zealand didn't waste any time in making their mark on England A with a try after just one minute when a good scrum in England's 22 saw scrum half Kendra Cocksedge break and find space to score. Anika Tiplady added the conversion.
But the Black Ferns' impressive start was thwarted for some time, with England really taking the game to them. Scrum-half La Toya Mason reduced the deficit to 7-3 with a sixth minute penalty while some good work in the contact areas, strong scrummaging and carrying, saw them pile the pressure on.
New Zealand were staunch in defence though, and England couldn't break their line. In attack, they proved to be a ferocious force and England's defence became exhausted when they lost lock Natalie Binstead to the sin bin after 22 minutes. The one man advantage took its toll, and New Zealand moved the ball from the right wing to the left with some slick passing through their backs, with winger Carla Hohepa managing to finish off the move. Tiplady couldn't add the conversion.
England were unlucky to go 19-3 down just before the break when, again, New Zealand's full force in attack proved impressive. England held firm for quite some time, with wing Amber Penrith making a try saving tackle, but New Zealand retained possession and spread the ball from the right to the left wing and in the end England ran out of players and wing Hohepa ran in for her second try. This time Tiplady added the conversion to make the score 19-3 at half time.
New Zealand continued the second half in the same vein with another impressive start. A good restart saw the Black Ferns in England's 22 and immediately put England on the back foot. Their winger couldn't make the line but prop Beth Mallard picked up and muscled her way over.
England rolled on the substitutes, and looked to be in a powerful position when New Zealand scrum half Cocksedge was sin-binned. England couldn't, however, make the most of the advantage and instead an in form Tiplady stroked over a penalty after 55 minutes to make the score 27-3.
The one way traffic continued for the tourists when replacement Huriana Manuel ran in for a soft score on 58 minutes and then centre Tiplady crossed herself, converting her own try, making the score 41-3. Replacement Kelly Brazier added salt to England's wounds with a 79 minute try, which was converted to make the final score 48-3.
