It's a new year, but most of us still have an old computer, a computer that is full of misplaced files, unused software and thousands of extra files that slow down the PC. Here are five free tools to easily make your PC run faster for 2010.
Keeping your PC optimized is perceived as hard and costly, but that's really not the case. here are five free and relatively easy to use tools that can make your PC run faster in 2010.
Do you get coffee, sometimes two cups, while waiting for your PC to startup? Then consider the Autoruns utility. This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system startup and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. Windows stores these startup programs in several different places and Autoruns helps you to locate these programs wherever they are hiding. You'll probably be surprised at how many programs are launched without you having any idea about them.
Organizing the thousands of files you've got stuffed into folders on your hard drive is one of those tasks that the majority of people put off and off and off. The free utility Digital Janitor automatically sorts your files by type and puts them where you want them. Tell Digital Janitor what hard drive folder it should sift through (like your desktop or download folder) then where you want up to seven types of files moved, and it takes care of the rest. For instance, if you've got pictures, documents, and MP3s cluttering up your desktop, point Digital Janitor to it, assign .jpgs to a Photos folder, .docs to another, and so on. The app takes care of getting files where they need to be, and you don't have to fool around with dragging and dropping things all over the place.
CCleaner is a free system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast - normally taking less than a second to run. Whether you are running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 - CCleaner will cleanup the debris from any of these operating systems.
Revo Uninstaller helps you to uninstall software and remove unwanted programs installed on your computer easily! While Windows has the Add or Remove Programs control panel applet, Revo Uninstaller takes it several steps further. Revo Uninstaller is a much faster and more powerful alternative to the built in Windows tools. Programs that Windows won't remove - Revo Uninstaller will remove them. While many software programs come with uninstallers, Revo digs deeper and removes every trace - file, temporary file and registry entry. With its advanced and fast algorithms, Revo Uninstaller analyzes an application's data before uninstall and scans for remnants after the uninstall of a program.
Keeping your Windows PC secure from viruses and spyware can be both difficult and expensive and some of the popular security software slows down computers. Microsoft Security Essentials is a free and effective anti-virus and anti-malware program - but there are many folks who don't like the fox (Microsoft) protecting the hen house (Windows). If you fall into that category than Panda Cloud Anitvirus or AVG Anitvirus are also free and offer excellent solutions to keep your PC safe.

Ccleaner is good but it may
Ccleaner is good but it may not be enough to clean and optimize the registry. If you are using it with a free registry defrag, that may be better.
Besides that, I want to add
Besides that, I want to add more.
To defragment disk by using Advanced Defrag is a good choice as well.
Anti-Virus apps have been
Anti-Virus apps have been nearly useless in protecting PC's. Malwarebytes (MWB) & CCleaner are by far the best tools to keep a PC clean. If you use the free version of MWB you should "Quick Scan" weekly (or if you have an infection do it immediately). Trust me - it will save your a$$. I repair PC's for a living and right now the onslaught of infected XP users is nothing short of amazing. If you use the MWB Pro version ($24.95) you will do best.
If you have a slow PC that is already "clean" and is free of malware - that is another issue. You have to be savvy enough to know which startup items you can turn off using the built-in MSCONFIG tool. Be careful in there as you could disable something you need to run. If you "Google" each exe file listed you can get an idea of whether or not you need that app to run (ie you probably need printer and anti-virus stuff running). Disabling the bulk of items there will dramatically improve speed. It does NOT remove the items from your PC it siomply stops them from automatically launching at start up. Turns you slug into a race horse.
After restarting (and logging in to Windows), a window appears confirming that "You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts." YOU MUST check the check box and Click OK to make your changes stick.
Working great now? I'll send you an bill! :-)
