Dimension Data NZ to connect Ocean Race stopover to the world

Dimension Data New Zealand is connecting the Auckland stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race to the world as the famous yacht race passes through the City of Sails.

The round-the-world yacht race, returning to Auckland on February 24 to 18 March, is held every three years and is one of the toughest global sporting events on the planet, attracting millions of viewers. The race village will be open to the public and is expected to attract more than half a million visitors during the stopover.

Dimension Data New Zealand is the Official Connectivity Partner of the Auckland Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-18, ensuring all those operating at and visiting the race village will be able to connect seamlessly.

"Sports events today are becoming very technical, and connectivity for both competitors and spectators is crucial in delivering a world class experience for an event of this scale" says Dimension Data Chief Executive Officer Wayne Yarr.

"Dimension Data is a leader in this space and our expert capability will be applied here to allow the Volvo Ocean Race organisation and teams to seamlessly and securely connect to their headquarters around the world."

Dimension Data is also enabling the Race Village experience, allowing the hospitality, retail vendors and corporate organisations to provide their services whilst delivering a seamless connectivity experience to both international and local visitors.

"Today we all expect connectivity to be seamless and intuitive. However, a lot has to happen for this to be the case and it’s no easy task," says Yarr.

Delivering a high-tech but temporary solution also comes with environmental and logistical challenges. Up to 120, forty-foot containers and more than 300 people will be needed to build the Race Village. "The Race Village stretches across Halsey Wharf, Viaduct Events Centre, Te Wero and the Eastern Viaduct. The challenges presented by nature of a concrete wharf, separated by water, meant we couldn’t connect the village in the usual way or rely solely on wireless technology because of the amount of interference in the area," says Yarr.

The resulting combination of wired and wireless connectivity is a completely custom architecture solution.

During the stopover Dimension Data will showcase how technology and data is accelerating digital transformation, including a custom-built 20-foot brand activation container demonstrating its innovative technology solutions at a global and local level, as well as providing visitors with immersive technology experiences.

Yarr says Dimension Data New Zealand is excited about helping to bring the Auckland stopover of the race to life.
