The fixed line telecommunications network in the Christchurch region remains stable and Chorus is working hard to make sure phone services are operating normally.
While the majority of the network has backup power in place, a small number of roadside cabinets have lost power affecting phone services to customers in the immediate vicinity.
Chorus is working hard to make sure all fixed line services will operate through an extended power outage and they are bringing in additional teams and equipment from around the country to ensure the network is stable.
Christchurch suffered a 7.1 magnitude earthquake which struck 30km west of the city at 4.35am this morning.
