News site Stuff.co.nz won the top award at one of New Zealand's most prestigious website awards, but failed to win the best media site, which went to TVNZ. 

TVNZ's General Manager of Digital Media Tom Cotter said: "I'm still buzzing as there's no greater accolade than winning an award that's voted for by our users."

Stuff won best overall website and best blog at the awards ceremony in Auckland last night.

Overseas giants overshadowed local domains in other awards, which are voted for by the public, with Facebook voted the country's favourite social networking site, google the favourite search engine and homepage and youtube the best entertainment site.   

NetGuide editor, Jonathan Cotton, said on the magazine's website today the competition had received a record 200,000 entries this year. 

“The sheer volume of votes shows you that when the Web is done well, people get excited about it." 

The Warehouse won best shopping site and an award for the best launch, relaunch or innovation (in a category it sponsored, according to the Netguide website). 

And for the fifth consecutive year, House of Travel won best travel site. House of Travel E-Commerce Director, Lindsay Cowley, said today: "This award is recognition from our customers that our sites are user-friendly, and clearly meet the needs of travellers who want to be able to view all airlines on one website, at one time."
