New vehicles in November boosted by rental registrations – MIA

Motor Industry Association Chief Executive Aimee Wiley says that November’s new registrations were boosted by a whopping 4,466 Rental units. This is the highest number of monthly rental registrations in the past 4 years contributing 30.7% of registrations in November.

This is a welcome boost for November registrations as light commercial registrations continue to be significantly impacted with savvy consumers awaiting the upcoming removal of Clean Car Discount Fees. Commercial registrations were down 32% on November 2022 and 40.9% on November 2021.

Overall, November registrations remain 7.1% lower than November 2022 (15,621 units) and 11.1% lower than November 2021 (16,327 units). On a year-to-date basis, 2023 is 8.9% lower than 2022 (13,637 units) and 9.0% lower than 2021 (13,870 units).

Top 3 overall market leaders in November 2023 are: Toyota with 24.9% market share (3,615 units), followed by Ford with 13.0% (1,894 units) and Mitsubishi with 8.0% (1,160 units).

November registrations breakdown: 

Light Passenger 11,497, Light Commercial 2,169 and Heavy Commercial 853.

Total Industry by motive power for the month of November: 

2,692 BEVs (18.5% share), 1,164 PHEVs (8.0% share), 3,426 Hybrids (23.6% share) and 7,237 ICE vehicles (49.8% share).

The overall top 3 segments in November were SUV Medium (32.7%), followed by SUV Compact (18.5%) and Small Vehicle (12.6%).

Light Passenger Vehicles (including SUVs) Registrations

Light passenger registrations of 11,497 are 2.9% (322 units) higher than November 2022 on the back of a spike in rental vehicle registrations in November. On a year-to-date basis light passenger registrations are down 5.4% (5,826 units) compared to the same period in 2022.

1. SUV medium 4,746 units (41.3% share of Light Passenger)

2. SUV compact 2,691 units (23.4% share of Light Passenger)

3. Small segment 1,824 units (15.9% share of Light Passenger). The small to medium segments

comprised 90.2% of Light passenger.

The top 3 models in November: Tesla Model Y (544 units, 21% share), followed by MG 4 (469 units,

18.1% share) and BYD ATTO 3 (338 units, 13.1% share).

Plug in Hybrid Vehicle (PHEVs):

The top 3 models in November: Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (314 units, 27% share), followed by

Mitsubishi Outlander (277 units, 23.8% share) and MG HS (239 units, 20.5% share).

Non-Plug in Hybrid Vehicle (HEVs):

The top 3 models in November: Toyota RAV4 (657 units, 19.2% share), followed by Toyota Corolla

(485 units, 14.2% share) and Toyota Corolla Cross (370 units, 10.8% share).

Commercial Vehicles

Registrations

Commercial registrations of 3,022 are 32.0% lower than November 2022 (1,424 units) and 40.9%

lower than November 2021 (5,113 units). On a year-to-date basis registrations are 17.3% lower

(7,811 units) compared to the same period in 2022.

Segment leaders

Ford took the market lead with 37.6% market share (1,135 units) followed by Toyota with 19.8%

(597 units) and LDV third with 4.5% market share (136 units).

Top selling models

The top three models for the month of November were the Ford Ranger (1,083 units), followed by

Toyota Hilux (420 units), and Toyota Hiace (169 units).

Motive Power

Light Commercial BEVs: 99 units in November, 375 units year-to-date. Heavy Commercial BEVs: 3

units in November, 104 units year-to-date.
