Current modelling for the Heavy Rain Warning – Red for Westland indicates that rain will ease off tonight but levels will increase again tomorrow (Friday) with peak falls expected around midday.
Agencies and first responders are mobilising to have people on the ground around the Westland district tonight and tomorrow.
MetService modelling indicates an easing of conditions from mid-late evening tonight and larger falls expected in the ranges between 12-1pm on Friday 19 January, particularly between Otira and inland from Haast.
Key agencies and groups met this afternoon to ensure there is strong connection and coordination.
“We are working with Westland District to activate an Emergency Operations Centre tomorrow,” said Claire Brown, Group Manager, West Coast Emergency Management.
“We all need to take this very seriously.”
Rivers around the district are being watched, with rises currently below first stage alarm levels. Department of Conservation has closed some tracks in the Franz Josef area and camp grounds in the region will close tomorrow as a precaution.
